Homework and other info:
Writing - School-wide write this week. Students wrote at the start of the year; now, they write again on the same topic to demonstrate growth in writing skills over the year. Topic is "A Favorite Place" or "A Special Time or Event". Today we did the outline.

Week of April 26-30
Tuesday, April 27..
- Writing - we began our final copies of our Life of a Colour poems. Final copy due Friday, April 30.
- Math - we did a lesson on fractions - the concept of 1/2 and fractions that are equal to, more than and less than 1/2.
- LAWS - words for Friday's test - Fraction words. numerator/denominator/fraction/decimal/equivalent /whole/half/tenths/hundredths
- also 5 challenge words
Art - students will be doing 2 pastel/paint scratch projects. They will hand in their chosen best for marking.

Weekend of April 24-25
Congratulations to Cam for placing 2nd of all Grade 4's in the 2010 Alouette Public Speaking Competition! Congratulations, too, to Nolan and Avri for making it to the finals! Excellent work by all.

- identify lines of symmetry of a given set of 2-D shapes and explain why each shape is symmetrical
- draw a symmetrical shape
- show understanding examples of symmetrical shapes found in the environment and identify the line(s) of symmetry

Spelling - test corrected, signed, returned.
Speech - bring all materials for Tuesday.
UBC Museum of Anthropology notice (field trip is Friday, April 16, Divisions 7&8) - please return ASAP. We are asking for parent volunteers to come along to supervise small groups in the museum. Your admission will be free, and if you wish you can carpool together in peace and quiet (and stop for coffee). :-)
The field trip is wonderful--plus, the Museum had built new sections since our last trip, so it should be even more interesting. I thank you for your continued support.

Speech outline - yellow sheet - subtopic details should be completed and yellow sheet returned to school by THURSDAY (to ensure that everyone has their work at school on Friday)
- speech does not have to be written in paragraph form yet - we will work on this on Friday
The speeches are written in essay format - ie. introduction, subtopics, conclusion.
It will be at LEAST 2 weeks before we begin presenting speeches formally. Until then, it's practice practice practice!

Math quiz upcoming!
On Friday, Feb. 12, there will be a Math quiz on the following concepts (see pages 150-161 of the Math Makes Sense textbook):
- measuring area of rectangles and squares
- estimating areas of shapes - using benchmarks, using symbols (*, X, etc.)
- different shapes with the same area (show equations) - ie. a rectangle with an area of 12 square cm could be 4x3, 6x2, or 12x1
- should you measure in square cm or square metres? Which unit makes the most sense to use?
- Reflect-style questions - thoughtful answers that require more explanation than just a number answer
