Social Studies - Explorer Trading Card
Your next Social Studies project is an ”Explorer Trading Card”. The idea is to do some research on an explorer of your choice, and present the information in a fun way (ie. not an essay ☺).
Choose an explorer that interests you from the 7 we have studied so far--Cabot, Cartier, Hudson, Franklin, Magellan, de Champlain and Columbus.
Research the explorer using the guidelines below and create your own trading card to present the information. You can use the trading card sample that I have on the website as a guide, but feel free to arrange the card the way you want. Feel free to google images of “trading cards”, “hockey cards”, etc., to get ideas for how to organize your own card.
Here is a sample.
You may use any resources to study your explorer: the internet, books, pictures, etc..
There are some elements that ALL trading cards must contain:
1) A front and a back (I will provide the paper for each side). These two sides will be glued to the two sides of a piece of manila cardboard and laminated.
FRONT
• simple
• large, colour hand-drawn/traced picture and name of the explorer
• you could also include the country that the explorer came from as the “team”!
BACK
• organize into sections
• paragraph(s) giving a brief “bio” of the explorer – quick overview of his life
• include the following info
- places and dates of birth and death
- places and dates of exploration (ie. Maple Ridge – 1798-1801)
- significant accomplishments
- interesting facts – at least 5 – but as many as you like!
- map of their route of exploration (I will provide printouts that you can draw on and colour)
2) ALL WRITING MUST BE IN YOUR OWN WORDS. You may NOT copy text word for word from any source.
3) All titles and headings must be in stylized print and easy to read.
4) All pictures must be hand-drawn or traced. All informational text must be printed or typed (no handwriting for informational text)
5) The entire project must be well-organized and not cluttered.

Happy Victoria Day! Hope everyone had a relaxing long weekend.
